We spoke with Steve to find out more about his time at Broadbean, his plans for his new role, and his love for golf!
Steve's journey prior to Volcanic
I started my career (after realising I’d never make a living on the golf course) in recruitment. I then spent the next 14 years in a variety of roles, from IT recruiter through to trainer and then eventually, business leader. I loved the industry, and still do, but wanted to step away from recruiting as a role. When Broadbean came along it was the perfect opportunity, as it allowed me to sell great technology back into a market that I knew and loved.
I spent 6 years running the Agency and Direct Employer teams but also had a strong involvement in Partnerships, which is where I met Volcanic. We worked closely on a number of mutual clients and I was always impressed by their technology, but more so their approach.
When the opportunity came up it just reminded me of Broadbean 6 years ago and why I joined them; an amazing company, great technology, and a real desire for growth. Having achieved that once before, I decided it was time for a new challenge.
Steve's Volcanic experience so far
It has been brilliant, and I’m not just saying that! Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and helpful and I’ve really enjoyed learning something new, but there is still a lot more to learn. It helps that I knew Volcanic so well from my previous role and that we sell to the same end market, but you never know what a company truly does until you work for them, so seeing how we help our clients is beyond what I ever imagined. It's very exciting.
In his new role, Steve is most looking forward to
Making a difference! Being successful is a given in a sales, but improving what we do and how we do it so that everyone grows, develops and succeeds in their own way would make me very happy.
In his spare time, you will find Steve
I don’t have any spare time! All jokes aside, I coach Under 12’s rugby at Sutton & Epsom RFC as my son plays and I love helping out there. When I’m not doing that, or taking my daughter swimming who trains 6 times a week, I try and get out and play golf or, at the very least, practice down the range.
Steve would love to share a coffee with
This is so tough as there are so many amazing and inspirational people you could learn from just over a coffee, but having spent my early life on the golf course I would have to say Seve Ballesteros as I consider him to be the greatest golfer ever. I know others have won more Majors but he had style, flair and showmanship that you just don’t see these days so I’d love to talk with him.
The best advice Steve has received is
As a leader I would say, ‘Bad news is better than no news’, and that is something that has always stuck with me. Sometimes we shy away from the difficult conversations or answers, but as a leader it is your responsibility to deal with these head on.
As an individual I would say, ‘Do what you said you would, when you said you would do it, how you said it would be done!’ Stand by that and I genuinely don’t think you will go too far wrong.
Steve's book recommendation is
I have to admit I am more into films than books but like many people I loved The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters as it just made me take a step back and think about certain situations, or more how I deal with them, in a very different way. But if you want a book to read that I doubt you’ve heard of, try Defending Your Brand by Professor Tim Calkins, who I had the fortune to be trained by in Chicago. He is as outstanding as you would expect from someone who lectures at Kellogg School of Management, but he changed the way I now look at marketing, and made me appreciate that it is the most important aspect of sales and strategy!
